Hypnotic: Action thriller starring Ben Affleck as a detective trying to solve a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program.
Plot and background
After the kidnapping of his daughter, detective Danny Rourke (Ben Affleck) only finds support in his job. A series of bank robberies has the police puzzled – apparent strangers commit the bank robbery without remembering any details afterwards. When a lead reveals a photo of his daughter, Danny begins to have hope and seeks out the mysterious Diana Cruz (Alice Braga).
She enlightens him about the so-called hypnotics – people who can exercise a kind of mind control over their fellow human beings. The supposed bank robber (William Fichtner) can decide the actions of his fellow human beings for them in a split second, but is he really who he claims to be? Danny must do everything he can to distinguish reality from mind games in order to save his daughter after all. A gripping chase begins, in which nothing is as it seems at first glance.

For director Robert Rodriguez, “Hypnotic” is a heartfelt project of sorts. Inspired by classics like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”, the Texan has always wanted to direct a film full of twists and turns, and as early as 2002 he was gathering initial ideas for the action thriller. With Ben Affleck (“Argo”) in the lead role, he gained a star who could carry an action thriller in a similar way to well-known actors like Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant.
Complementing the cast are Alice Braga (“The Suicide Squad”), William Fichtner (“Black Hawk Down”), Dayo Okeniyi (“Rise”) and Jackie Earle Haley (“Watchmen”). Rodriguez co-wrote the screenplay with Max Borenstein (“Godzilla”).
“Hypnotic” opens in German cinemas on August 10, 2023. The FSK rating is still pending.
