Still quick to stream on Prime Video: This film is almost perfect

by Mike

Original, action-packed, with charismatic stars and a good dose of wit – that’s how we like blockbusters. A prime example of this is the sci-fi spectacle “Edge Of Tomorrow” with Tom Cruise, which unfortunately will soon be kicked out of the Amazon Prime Video subscription.

If you like sci-fi actioners, you’ll love “Edge Of Tomorrow – Live. Die. Repeat”, the film in which Tom Cruise has to be beaten up by Emily Blunt and killed by aliens in a continuous loop. If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, we can only recommend this incredibly entertaining blockbuster – even more so if you only rely on Amazon’s online service for your streaming subscriptions. Because …

… “Edge Of Tomorrow” can only be viewed by Prime subscribers at no additional cost on Amazon Prime Video until August 19, 2023. So if you should stroll through the Prime Video offer this weekend undecided and wondering what to watch, then you definitely won’t go wrong with this sci-fi highlight. However, if you are also a Netflix customer, you can take a more relaxed approach. Here the film will be available for a little longer.

“Edge Of Tomorrow” is by no means a cinematic milestone, but it’s still a really good film, as our 4-star review by FILMSTARTS editor Björn Becher underlines. Above all, it has exactly the right ingredients for a perfect blockbuster. And after all, such a blockbuster is not necessarily about the most sophisticated story or the most exquisite images, but about spectacular entertainment that is not too banal to bore you now, but doesn’t demand top mental performance either.

“EDGE OF TOMORROW”: TOM CRUISE AND EMILY BLUNT ARE A TOP DUO

The exciting but not overly complex plot in “Edge Of Tomorrow” is also garnished with two top stars in the best of moods. Hollywood’s action specialist Tom Cruise, who in his “Mission: Impossible” films loves to perform the most hair-raising stunts himself (his character Ethan Hunt, of course, then survives the highly dangerous situations in the film with the routine of an unbreakable secret agent), plays an inexperienced soldier who dies over and over again in a time loop with wonderful self-irony.

In the interplay with the great Emily Blunt, who as the tough war veteran Rita Vrataski has no nerve for the newcomer’s whining when it’s about saving humanity after all, the chemistry is just right – and the humor, which is especially effective in the fight-die-wake-up collages of Cruise’s character. “…And Everyday is Groundhog Day” during an alien invasion, as it were.

TIME LOOP IN ALIEN WAR

But why does Bill Cage (Cruise) actually have to die so many times? After humans have been fighting aliens that have invaded Earth for years, an all-important battle is about to take place – which the humans lose and Bill Cage also dies. But miraculously he wakes up again, on the morning before the battle.

This happens again and again, and when the hardened soldier Rita Vrataski finds out, she starts to train Bill. He is supposed to use his knowledge to change the outcome of the battle by reliving it – not only for himself, but for humanity. The crux of the matter: Bill remembers what happened every morning, but Rita doesn’t…

WHERE IS “EDGE OF TOMORROW 2”?

What was also a big plus about “Edge Of Tomorrow” at the cinema was that the story felt fresh, finally a big action blockbuster that didn’t belong to a franchise (but was based on a book, by the way). But whenever we like something, we want more, and so “Edge Of Tomorrow 2” came into the conversation pretty quickly – not only because audiences wanted more, by the way, but also because clearly the trio of Doug Liman (director), Blunt and Cruise had had so much fun with the film that they kept talking enthusiastically in interviews about the possibility of a return.

But the truth is, “Edge Of Tomorrow” was over eight years ago now, and there’s still no concrete sign that “Edge Of Tomorrow 2” is actually still coming. The stars have assured us time and again that the project is really next, and the script is supposed to have been finished long ago – but nothing happened.

Emily Blunt also seems to be getting impatient and apparently blames Tom Cruise and his commitments to the long-running “Mission: Impossible” franchise for the lack of a sequel. In the meantime, however, work is said to be underway on another project, namely an “Edge Of Tomorrow” series. Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen, as the announcement is now over a year old. More information about this can be found here.
