Really every film and television fan should have heard of the helpful dog lady Lassie. In Germany, there was a cinema reboot in 2020 with “Lassie – An Adventurous Journey”, which you can now stream on Amazon Prime Video.
The dog lady Lassie is an absolute film and television cult. The collie with the helper syndrome now brings it to a beaten 21 (!) Feature film adventures. Not all of Lassie’s outings have been seen in the movies, but the four-legged friend has been thrilling audiences for decades – as far back as 1938, when author Eric Knight published the short story “Lassie Come Home”. Then in 1943, “Homesick” (also known as “Lassie’s Homesickness”) was released, the first full-length feature film – starring a then still 11-year-old Elizabeth Taylor (“Cleopatra”).
The second part of the reboot from Germany, “Lassie – Ein neues Abenteuer” (Lassie – A New Adventure), has been in cinemas since July 27, 2023, and features a wonderfully convincing performance by Justus von Dohnányi. Anyone who wants to watch the predecessor film “Lassie – An Adventurous Journey” can currently do so on Amazon Prime Video. Starting today, August 15, 2023, Prime subscribers can stream the adventure film at no additional cost.

Twelve-year-old Flo (Nico Marischka) and Lassie the dog are an inseparable duo who live a carefree life together in a tranquil little village in southern Germany. But when Florian’s father Andreas (Eberhofer crime star Sebastian Bezzel) loses his job, the family is forced to move into a small apartment. That wouldn’t be bad in itself, but no animals are allowed in the new domicile and so Flo has to say goodbye to his beloved dog with a heavy heart.

With Count von Sprengel (Matthias Habich), the Collie lady finds a new home. Together with his granddaughter Priscilla (Bella Beding), he immediately sets off on a vacation to the North Sea. And here the faithful dog becomes the victim of a crime: the nasty janitor (Christoph Letkowski) has it in for the four-legged friend and kidnaps her without further ado. But Lassie manages to escape and sets off on an adventurous journey across Germany, always in search of Florian…
In our “Lassie – An Adventurous Journey” gets a solid 3 out of 5 stars. Author Markus Tschiedert comes to the following conclusion:
“After 15 years finally the overdue comeback for the probably most famous dog in film history! Only one would have wished for a more focused, less cluttered script for Lassie’s return – so the focus is too much on the (too many) human characters and too little on the really great dog scenes. “
