One of the best series of 2022: Sci-fi highlight will not get a 2nd season after all.

Many fans were delighted when Amazon Prime Video confirmed last February that “Peripherie” would be getting a second season. Now it will not come to a renewal after all. The blame is said to be not least the big Hollywood strike.

After Amazon Prime Video gave the green light to a continuation a few months ago, now comes the drumbeat for all fans of “Periphery”: The science fiction series will not get a second season after all! This reports among other things Variety.

As the well-connected industry magazine has now revealed, Amazon Prime Video will not continue the dystopian sci-fi hit. Last February – a good four months after the exclusive streaming launch of the format on Amazon’s streaming platform – the world looked quite different for the fans as well as for the creators of the series. At the time, it was said that it was not yet known when, but that “Peripherie” would be continued. Another half year later comes the shock. It will not continue with one of the best series of the previous year in our opinion

The writers’ and actors’ strike still ongoing in Hollywood had a big influence on this decision, an insider source tells Variety. “Even if the series had gone back into production soon, Season 2 probably wouldn’t have been released until sometime near the end of 2024, maybe even 2025,” it also says.

“Periphery” was the first series to come out of a $150 million deal between Amazon and series creator duo Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy – but by no means the last. After Nolan had already penned the scripts for several of his brother Christopher’s films, such as “The Dark Knight” and “Interstellar,” Joy ventured into the director’s chair with “Reminiscence” in 2021. Together, Nolan and Joy, who have also been married since 2009, were also responsible for HBO’s science fiction hit “Westworld. Next, the two are working on a series adaptation of the hit video game “Fallout” for Amazon.

THIS IS/WAS “PERIPHERY “

“Periphery” is based on a novel by William Gibson – the author who once penned an early draft of the screenplay for “Alien 3” that was ultimately scrapped, but at least ended up being published in the form of a (totally worth reading!) graphic novel.

The near future: Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her brother Burton (Jack Reynor) take care of their blind mother together – until one day an ominous company makes them an offer they can’t refuse: As passionate virtual reality fans, they are to try out a new VR technology. Since this would also help with their money problems, the siblings naturally accept.

But when Flynne dives into 1970s London one day to steal something, she’s initially taken aback by how real the trip back in time feels. When she returns, she finally realizes what’s really going on here – and before she knows it, she has to fear for her life…

The fact that “Peripherie” is now over is especially bitter because the series ends with a cliffhanger – but we don’t want to go into that here. Maybe you still want to take a look and follow the recommendation of our YouTube moderator Sebastian Gerdshikows (see video below), who was enthusiastic about the novel adaptation at the end of last year. And he’s not the only one: “Peripherie” landed in the top 15 in FILMSTARTS’ and Moviepilot’s big ranking of the best series of 2022!
