After “The Batman” on Amazon Prime Video and before “The Batman 2”, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2025, the series spin-off “The Penguin” will be released, in which Colin Farrell once again takes on the role of the dreaded gangster. Here is the first trailer:
It was known for a while that the series will come, since a while there is also a first trailer for Matt Reeves “The Batman” series spin-off “The Penguin”. In this one, the focus is on the feared gangster boss Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin and his power struggle in the underworld of Gotham City.
In the preview, we not only get a good look at Colin Farrell, transformed almost beyond recognition by the excellent mask work, who will once again slip into the role of the ruthless Batman adversary as he did in “The Batman,” but the start date in 2024 is also confirmed. In the U.S., “The Penguin” will run on the streaming service (HBO) Max, in Germany probably either on RTL+ or Sky / WOW.
Tonally, the trailer for “The Penguin” also moves in “The Batman” realms and paints a harsh picture of the DC metropolis Gotham City, which is characterized by violence and crime. Actually, you expect every second that the Batman played by Robert Pattinson comes around the corner – and who knows, maybe there will be a small appearance of Gotham’s dark knight.
THIS IS WHAT “THE PENGUIN” IS ABOUT
The eight-part series will pick up where “The Batman” left off in 2022.After the Riddler (Paul Dano) takes out one of Gotham City’s most important mob bosses, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), he floods the city center in a coordinated terrorist attack – and as the city descends into chaos, a power vacuum is created in Gotham’s underworld that somehow wants to be filled.
And who better to plug that hole than Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, often referred to by his enemies simply as the Penguin because of his quirky appearance and shambling gait?
Alongside Colin Farrell, the series will also feature Cristin Milioti (“How I Met Your Mother”) as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of ex-Underworld boss Carmine Falcone, and Michael Zegen (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Falcone’s son Alberto Falcone – and surely these characters will want to have a say in the battle for power in Gotham.
Meanwhile, Clancy Brown (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) will star as Salvatore Maroni, one of Gotham’s former top gangsters, while Marvel star Rhenzy Feliz (“Marvel’s Runaways”) will give the Penguin’s driver and confidant. In addition, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau and David H. Holmes also join the series’ illustrious cast.
