Sophia, Death and Me: German comedy by Charly Hübner about Death who fails at doing a job and has an adventure in the mortal world.
Plot and background
When the doorbell rings, Reiner (Dimitrij Schaad) doesn’t expect to suddenly find himself face to face with Death (Marc Hosemann), who tells him he has three minutes to live. But Reiner’s ex-girlfriend Sophia (Anna Maria Mühe) shows up almost at the same time and has other plans, which causes Death to see his operating schedule disrupted and Reiner’s demise increasingly postponed. Together, the disparate trio sets off on a chaotic journey that leads them first to Reiner’s mother (Johanna Gastdorf) and finally to his seven-year-old son Johnny (Mateo Kanngiesser). Death seems to enjoy the involuntary vacation in the earthly world, if only it weren’t for the second death (Carlo Ljubek), who is supposed to complete the failed job on the orders of the seemingly omnipotent G. (Josef Ostendorf) and his archangel Michaela (Lina Beckmann). A race against time begins, in which Reiner jumps from the brink of death more than once.

“Sophia, Death & Me” – background, cast, theatrical release
After 20 years of film and television career, Charly Hübner (“Mittagsstunde”) makes his debut as a director with “Sophia, der Tod & ich”. The tragicomedy is an adaptation of the acclaimed debut novel of the same name by cult musician Thees Uhlmann, who, along with the female musician duo Steiner & Madlaina, also contributed most of the songs for the soundtrack.
Charly Hübner gathers a renowned German acting ensemble for his first feature film. In the lead role, as the doomed Reiner, the successful actor Dimitrij Schaad (“The Kangaroo Conspiracy”) shines. His gruff ex-girlfriend Sophia is embodied by Anna Maria Mühe (“Solo for Weiss”), while Death himself is played by Marc Hosemann (“Die Discounter”), who recently received great acclaim for his portrayal of Mephisto at the Berlin Volksbühne. Johanna Gastdorf (“KDD – Kriminaldauerdienst”) can be seen as Reiner’s mother, and Charly Hübner himself also took on a small role.
The German theatrical release for “Sophia, Death & I” is on August 31, 2023.
