Denzel Washington proves that he can still be cool and tough in “The Equalizer 3”. But in a dystopian sci-fi actioner, the now 68-year-old is almost even more hard-boiled: “The Book Of Eli”.
There’s one thing you have to hand it to Denzel Washington: For the fact that the two-time Oscar winner (for “Glory” and “Training Day”) is approaching 70, he still looks damn good! But not only that: he may be even cooler with experience than he was when he was younger. And so you buy the ice-cold, hardened killing machine in the “Equalizer” films without batting an eye. Yes, even cooler, even more merciless – is that even possible? Well, you can see for yourself today, both on TV and streaming:
“The Book Of Eli” airs today, September 12, 2023, starting at 10:15 p.m. on Nitro. In addition, the sci-fi actioner is also available since yesterday in the subscription at Amazon Prime Video – where all with subscription can make themselves a picture of Washington’s perhaps even allercoolster and deadliest figure without any additional costs:
With this, fans of equally gritty as action-packed and entertaining dystopias are currently getting their money’s worth on Amazon’s streaming platform. After the 90s cult “Demolition Man” with Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock landed with “The Book Of Eli” the next must-see for end time enthusiasts on the service – which does not quite reach the level of the great genre classics (“Mad Max”) and highlights (“Children Of Men”), but still comes along with enough show values to keep 100 minutes best mood.
“THE BOOK OF ELI”: STYLISH ACTION & GREAT ACTORS
In the near future, Earth is not what it used to be. Wars have left a devastated wasteland that lone warrior Eli (Denzel Washington) roams on his own. But he must be careful, he carries a valuable document with him, which is attributed great importance – and which the brutal Carnegie (Gary Oldman) therefore wants to get his hands on at any price.
And so Eli soon has to deal with his henchmen. But the lonely warrior is willing to defend the legendary book, which could be of utmost importance for the future of mankind, with his life.
“The Book Of Eli” is an absolute must-see for all fans of spectacular slow-motion action, gripping end-time scenarios and imagery drenched in color filters. Beginning with the first action scene, in which the title hero goes on the hunt in super slow motion, up to the explosive finale, the futuristic-dark thriller of the twin brothers Albert and Allen Hughes (“From Hell”) scores above all with staging finesse – as well as not least with outstanding actors like Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, whose lips you just love to hang on. (Also in the cast are Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Malcolm McDowell, among others).
On top of that, there are one or two twists that you might not see coming. Whether you swallow these twists or even like them depends not only on your opinion about the meaning of the Book of Eli, but is also directly related to whether the film captivates you from the start – or whether it merely functions as eye candy for you.
