The new additions to Amazon Prime Video in October are likely to make the hearts of action and science fiction fans beat faster. But in keeping with the spooky season, the streaming service is also bringing back a few real horror hits.
October has a lot in store for film and series fans on Amazon Prime Video, with a whole range of genres and franchises that we’ve been looking forward to streaming for a long time. At the forefront is “Matrix Resurrections”, which we can welcome to the programme from 16 October, alongside the original “Matrix” trilogy (which is already available from 13 October). The infamous sequel to the cult series starring Keanu Reeves was one of the sci-fi highlights of the 2021 cinema year and has generated plenty of conversation among fans old and new.
No less hotly anticipated has been “Top Gun: Maverick”, which we only saw on the big screen last year. Also available for free streaming to Prime subscribers* for the first time from 16 October, Tom Cruise returns to the pilot costume and his cult character Maverick that made him famous in the mid-80s. The action spectacle not only set the box office ringing, but also delighted many critics and our FILMSTARTS editors, who awarded the blockbuster a remarkable four out of five stars.
October would be nothing without some decent horror movies, though. Luckily, the month on Amazon Prime Video is framed by two of the most well-known scary series. Directly on 1 October we get the two “Carrie” shockers back in the licensed catalogue. Shortly before Halloween, we can also look forward to the three films in “The Purge” series (from 23 October).
On the other hand, those who don’t like it quite so violent and prefer to be spooked by psychological thrillers instead of sheer horror can look forward to the first season of the Amazon original series “The Therapy” at the end of October. Based on the bestseller by Sebastian Fitzek, the six-episode series can be streamed on the platform from 26 October and is once again a German in-house production that packs a punch.
Also from Amazon, the original drama “The Burial” (from 13 October) should be mentioned, which features a real star line-up with Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx. Jamie Foxx is hired here as a charismatic lawyer by the “Men in Black” star, who plays a curmudgeonly undertaker. The mismatched pair is supposed to work together for justice – and for a few laughs in our house, too.
Last but not least, we can recommend two indie gems: “Red Rocket” (from 30 October) by the celebrated “The Florida Project” director Sean Baker and festival favourite “Holy Spider” (from 3 October). The visually and aurally impressive David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” (from 20 October) is not only something for music lovers.
