Edgar Wright created between “Shaun Of The Dead” and “Baby Driver” one of the most original comic book adaptations ever, which is still an insider tip. Netflix now dares to a (true to the style!) New interpretation:
While Batman, Spider-Man and Co. are still considered big crowd pullers, Marvel and DC are by no means the only ones who skillfully and/or successfully bring celebrated comics to the cinema – this is also shown by the ranking of the FILMSTARTS community, which also voted films like “Sin City” or “Oldboy” into the top 10. If the author of this article has his way, however, a criminally neglected genre highlight is missing from the best list: “Scott Pilgrim vs. the Rest of the World”.
While audiences didn’t seem ready for Edgar Wright’s (“Shaun Of The Dead,” “Baby Driver”) fireworks of ideas in 2010 – the film grossed only $49.3 million worldwide – it nevertheless advanced over the years to become a cult film, and quite rightly so. Netflix also recognized the potential of the material, snatched up the cast and crew of the movie adaptation and is now remaking the whole thing in series format. And not as a live-action adventure, but as the animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” which in the new, unbelievably fast and furious trailer almost looks as if the comic book original had been run through a magic machine that converted it true to the original.
In any case, the style seems to have been meticulously adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comics. Whether the series can also keep up with the original narratively remains to be seen. “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” launches November 17, 2023 exclusively on Netflix.
For all those who can hardly wait for the launch or want to get to grips with the original in advance, the author of this article can, by the way, give an unqualified recommendation for the comics – which you can currently already get for a pittance in the 6-book collection:
Wright’s film can currently be found streaming at Joyn*, in addition, the somewhat different hero adventure is also available as video-on-demand (for example at Amazon Prime Video*) and of course on DVD and Blu-ray*.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN “SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF “
The series tells the familiar story, which Edgar Wright also took on with his film in 2010 – and not only goes into more detail, but also brings minor changes: The Scott Pilgrim adored Ramona Flowers, for example, does not deliver packages for Amazon, but brings DVDs for Netflix to the door (a service that existed for many years in the U.S.).
At the center of the story is once again Scott Pilgrim, who wants to win the heart of Ramona Flowers – but first has to conquer her seven devilish ex-girlfriends.
What also remains the same: The entire cast of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the Rest of the World” returns in the series – and will lend their voices to the characters. Joining the cast once again are Michael Cera (as Scott Pilgrim) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (as Ramona Flowers), as well as Marvel stars Chris Evans (Lucas Lee) and Brie Larson (Envy Adams), along with Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells), Alison Pill (Kim Pine), Aubrey Plaza (Julie Powers), Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram), Johnny Simmons (Young Neil), Mark Webber (Stephen Stills), Mae Whitman (Roxie) and Ellen Wong (Knives Chau), among others. And of course, Jason Schwartzman as head ex Gideon Graves is not to be missed.
