But it wasn’t just the style that changed:Travis Knightsmovie is set in the old Transformers universe – and yet rebooted it. With the consequence thattons of mythology was thrown overboard. We explain exactly what happened in this article
Bumblebee has (almost) nothing to do with Michael Bay’s Transformers films
The Transformers story of the cinema series began in 2007 withShia LaBeouf. The timeline of the Transformers films looks like this:
1987: Bumblebee
2007:Transformers- with flashbacks to 1897
2009:Transformers – Revenge- with flashbacks to 17,000 B.C.
2012:Transformers 3- with flashbacks to 1961 and 1969
2017:Transformers 4: Era of Doom- with flashbacks to 65 million BC
2018:Transformers 5: The Last Knight- with flashbacks to 484 AD
In the first five films, we learn how the Autobots and Decepticons changed world history. We see analternate version of the moon landing(in Dark of the Moon), experience the Crusades and even the extinction of the dinosaurs (in Age of Exitinction).
Bumblebee jumps to 1987 and tellsactuallythe back story of the same Autobots that Sam Witwicky and Mikaela (Megan Fox) meet. But it’s not that simple. Bumblebee isn’t interested in Shia LaBeouf, nor is he interested in Dinobots. None of that seems to exist in his universe
Why Bumblebee had to erase the old Transformers story
(Bumblebee)
After escaping from the planet Cybertron, the Autobot Bumblebee befriends the young woman Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld): a retelling of the story with Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky. Both origin stories are mutually exclusive
Sam Witwicky and the 65 million years of Transformers history up to the dinosjust burns Bumblebee away. And there’s a good reason for that, as director Travis Knight admitted toDigital Spy
We didnt want to scare the audience away with too much mythologyI wanted everyone to be able to go into this movie and understand it, like it and enjoy it. I didn’t want to assume any familiarity with the franchise.
However, Bumblebee clearly takes place in the familiar Transformers world. You can recognize it by these features:
- The Sector 7 organization appears in the story.
- Bumblebee has the familiar design.
- The sound effects sound like in the Michael Bay films.
- And even some younger versions of well-known characters appear, such as Agent Seymour Simmons (John Turturro).

A deliberate compromise:“It was always a balancing act. Are we ripping out too much of what the fans of the franchise love?It was important […] that we respect the fans. “

- The end of Transformers 7 proves:The series is forgiven
Bumblebee didn’t want to reboot the entire Transformers story so as not to alienate regular fans. On the other hand, the pent-up Michael Bay myhology weighed down Bumblebee’s light-hearted approach. The victim:65 million years of Transformers history that no longer exist in movie reality.
You can now stream Bumblebee on Netflix. In addition to the spin-off, all other parts of the Transformers series are available on the streaming service. You can rent the latest film Transformers 7 from Amazon, among others
