Game of Thrones has set new standards in terms of shocking series violence. And the spin-off House of the Dragon is in no way inferior to the parent series: in episode 1, which aired on ProSieben on March 8, 2023, the series shows a disturbing birth scene. Producers Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal showed the sequence to a number of women as a test. And came to a surprising conclusion. Spoiler alert:
Horror moment from House of the Dragon episode 1 should be harder, according to viewers
In the first episode of House of the Dragon, complications arise when Targaryen Queen Aemma (Sian Brooke) gives birth to the hoped-for heir to the throne. Her husband Viserys (Paddy Considine) is forced to choose between his wife’s life and that of his child. In the end, he arranges a kind of Caesarean section, during which his shocked wife bleeds to death without having been informed about the procedure beforehand.

“We showed [the scene] to as many women as possible and asked, ‘Was that too violent for you?” explained Sapochnik, according to Business Insider . “And unanimously we got the answer ‘No’. They often said, ‘If anything, [the scene] needs to be harder.
As Sapochnik explains, the scene is not only shocking because of the level of violence. Rather, it is disturbing because the mother of the child is not given any freedom of choice during the birth. According to the producer, this shows what kind of world House of the Dragon is set in.
