In March, Hollywood’s most important film award is presented. The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were announced today. The nominees include Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Barbie
Last year, the science fiction spectacle Everything Everywhere All at Once emerged as the winning film at the Academy Awards. This year, the biopic Oppenheimer, the sci-fi film Poor Things and the toy hit Barbie are among the favourites for the 2024 Oscars. The nominees have just been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Sandra Hüller alongside Emma Stone in the Oscar race
German actress Sandra Hüller has been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the courtroom thriller Anatomy of a Case, joining Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Carey Mulligan (Maestro) in the race
Sandra Hüller is only the third German actress after Luise Rainer and Marlene Dietrich to receive an Oscar nomination (via Hollywood Reporter ). In the same category, Lily Gladstone from Killers of the Flower Moon is the first indigenous US actress to be nominated.
13 Oscar nominations for Oppenheimer
Anatomy of a Case is also represented in the Best Picture category. This is where the dominant films of the year in cinema are making their mark: Oppenheimer (13 nominations in total) and Barbie (8 nominations). Martin Scorsese’s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon landed 10 nominations, while Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos has 11 Oscar chances (more on Poor Things in this article).
From Germany, the team behind Das Lehrerzimmer (The Teachers’ Lounge), which has been nominated in the Best International Film category, can also hold out hope. The same applies to Wim Wenders’ drama Perfect Days, although it was submitted for Japan.
