29-hour war epic by Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks: Why you should watch Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Masters of the Air

by Tommy

Masters of the Air is a new war series that follows on from the success of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. We take a look at all three series in the podcast and reveal which ones are worthwhile for whom.
Land war, island war, air war: Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg launched the highly acclaimed war series Band of Brothers 23 years ago, followed by The Pacific in 2010 and now joined by Masters of the Air. We take a look at the phenomenon of war “entertainment”, explain the hype of the three stories in comparison and introduce you to the merits of each series.

With its deliberately sought-after realism, Band of Brothers was a series success for the HBO channel in 2001 and is still a war series masterpiece over 20 years later. The spiritual successors also emulated the detailed depiction of the Second World War by drawing on actual veterans’ experiences. The latest series Masters of the Air is currently running on Apple TV+ and impresses with new facets of the change of perspective into the cockpit.

But it doesn’t matter whether Dick Winter (Damien Lewis) is leading his soldiers overland towards Germany in battles with heavy losses, whether Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale) is jumping from island to island in the fight against Japan or whether Buck Cleven and Bucky Egan (Austin Butler and Callum Turner) are dropping their bombs in air battles: Each of the three series knows how to convincingly capture the terrible experiences from the loss of comrades to the devastating crash in a series. Which one wins the race for best war series? Our opinions differ on that. But all three are worthwhile
