Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is said to be planning a reboot of the legendary sci-fi series The X-Files. Gillian Anderson has now revealed whether she could imagine a return.
The X-Files became one of the most legendary sci-fi series of all time over a run of almost 25 years and 11 seasons. So it’s no wonder that since the last episode of the cult format flickered across TV screens in 2018, there have been repeated rumors about a possible return of the series.
Back in spring 2023, X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke of wanting to bring the series back in a new guise for Disney and explained that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler was behind the reboot. While it was previously unknown whether the stars of the series would return for the new edition, X-Files icon Gillian Anderson has now spoken out
Gillian Anderson could imagine a return to The X-Files
The actress confirmed on the Today Show that Ryan Coogler is indeed working on an X-Files reboot:
It’s funny, because ever since we finished The X-Files, I’ve been asked about it in every interview and always said ‘Nope, it’s not happening, it’s not happening.’ Now Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther – a great filmmaker – has approached Chris Carter and wants to try his hand at it and I can’t think of a better way to approach the reboot.

Anderson also addressed a possible return to the franchise on her part – and gave fans hope against all odds. It’s no secret that the actress had been done with the series for years, as she shared her displeasure with how the show ended for her on X in the season 11 finale. However, she revealed on the Today Show that she wouldn’t be averse to being involved:
‘Whether I’m involved in it or not is another thing. I’m not saying no. I think [Ryan Coogler] is really cool and if he does it, it would probably be pretty good. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something.
It remains to be seen if and when we can expect the X-Files reboot and whether Anderson will actually return in it.
