Jason Statham’s worst movie launched a fantasy trilogy – one part of which is worse than the other

In 2007, Jason Statham launched a fantasy trilogy with a movie that many consider to be his worst. However, his sequels disappointed fans even more

Jason Statham has something for every action fan. Gangster comedies like Snatch from his early days, blockbusters like The Expendables and even horror fun like Meg 2: The Deep. According to sites like Rotten Tomatoes, not every movie is of exhilarating quality. But apparently nothing comes close to the total fantasy failure Swords of the King – Dungeon Siege. Except for its sequels.

Jason Statham’s fantasy flop comes from a notorious German director

Swords of the King is an adaptation of the 2002 video game Dungeon Siege. The movie revolves around a farmer named Farmer (Statham) whose son is murdered one day by animalistic creatures. In order to rescue his kidnapped wife Solana (Leelee Sobieski) and get revenge, he goes on the warpath.

The fantasy action comes from Uwe Boll, who has repeatedly provoked extreme reactions with films such as Postal, Rampage and Auschwitz. Many critics consider the majority of his filmography to be inferior in terms of craftsmanship. And Swords of the King is no exception: among many other negative reviews, the Hollywood Reporter, for example, attests to the film’s “atrocious script and incompetent direction”.

All viewers must decide for themselves whether the critical tenor is true. The fact is that Boll followed up Swords of the King with two sequels, which performed even worse with viewers according to Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.

Boll replaced Jason Statham in Swords of the King – Two Worlds and Swords of the King – The Final Mission, starring Dolph Lundgren and Dominic Purcell. Both films were released directly for home cinema without a German theatrical release. They revolve around elite fighters from the present day who land in the world of Dungeon Siege via time travel.
