In a new video, Netflix announces the animated adventure series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. A Marvel star can be heard there as the title heroine

Netflix has announced the animated adventure series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft via video for fall 2024. Hayley Atwell, known from Marvel’s Agent Carter and Mission: Impossible 7, can be heard as action archaeologist Lara Croft – at least in the original English version. Atwell is following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, only without having to put on the adventurer’s outfit for a live-action film

The Legend of Lara Croft, like the Castlevania series, comes from the Texan animation studio Powerhouse Animation. Under its umbrella, showrunner Tasha Huo set out to close a gap in the narrative of the popular video game series: The Netflix format is set between the game series that launched in the 90s and the reboot series – and aims to build a bridge between the versions.

As expected, we see the skilled tomb raider equipped with a bow and arrow plus firearms riding through historic cultural cities on her motorcycle. In her animated adventure, someone has broken into her estate to steal a Chinese artifact. In the wrong hands, the valuable item could become extremely dangerous, so it’s up to Lara to save the world once again.

On the internet, the announcement teaser sparked a discussion about the term “anime” among some fans, as DiscussingFilm’s X-Channel shows. “We need a new word for western animation,” said one fan. Netflix also published the video on its anime channel, but did not refer to the series as a representative of the Japanese-born art form.

Amazon is also currently working on a new Tomb Raider-themed project, albeit in video game and live-action form. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fleabag mastermind Phoebe Waller-Bridge is said to have a hand in the project.
