The first glimpse that Netflix has given us of the third season of the hit South Korean series reminds us of what was missing from season 2… and is now apparently returning.
After Netflix recently announced the start of season 3 of the hit series Squid Game, the streamer is now also giving insights into the big series finale with the first images – and bringing back an element from season 1 that many may not have missed at all.
First Netflix images of the 3rd season of Squid Game return to the VIPs
Squid Game is still keeping a low profile on the plot of the third season. The remaining players have to fight for survival after the failed uprising, and clues to three new games have already been hidden in the background. In particular, the new killer doll from the credits scene promises a multitude of further deaths. In addition, the theory of a second hidden mole is circulating.
As Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) story reaches its climax, the Netflix series is surprisingly bringing back another element from season 3. If we can believe one of the first images of the Squid Game return, it’s a reunion with the rich, watching sponsors.
Alongside a chained Gi-hun and a coffin gift in the dormitory, one of the new season 3 scene images shows not only the (now re-masked) frontman (Tom Choi) aka 001, but also a colorful background that Squid Game fans themselves vaguely recognize: the VIP lounge.
In season 2, the viewers hidden behind animal masks, who enjoyed the bloodbath and placed bets on the outcome, were conspicuously absent. In the new season, however, their absence is apparently addressed and explained when Netflix shows us their familiar surveillance room.
The wealthy observers were one of the most unpopular and controversial elements of Squid Game in season 1. They were out of line, especially because of their over-the-top portrayal, and detracted from the viewing experience for many. So bringing them back is a surprising decision. On the other hand, it also shows that the Netflix series wants to tie up all its loose ends, so maybe the VIPs will get what they deserve in season 2?
Meanwhile, Netflix has announced the exact start date for when Squid Game will return with season 3: on June 27, 2025, all episodes of the finale will be released and we will learn how the story ends. However, possible spin-offs are already being discussed.
