The Electric State on Netflix is one of the biggest sci-fi blockbusters of the year. Will there be a part 2? A scene from the Netflix movie already reveals how it would continue.
No movie screams “franchise” like the sci-fi hit The Electric State, which recently became available on Netflix. An incredible budget, 1000 stars and a story that can easily be expanded give fans hope for part 2. But what about a sequel right now?
Is The Electric State 2 coming to Netflix?
A sequel to the sci-fi movie is not currently confirmed. Neither Netflix nor directors Joe and Anthony Russo have yet commented unequivocally on a sequel.
In view of the circumstances, however, The Electric State 2 seems very likely: with an alleged budget of 320 million, the franchise expectation is already in the air. With this money, the sci-fi blockbuster should not only be a success, it should also create the basis for sequels or spin-offs.
Incidentally, the Russo brothers are considered masters of the franchise: with Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War, they are behind the biggest Marvel blockbusters, and they have expanded their Citadel series to include several international offshoots. If anyone expects The Electric State 2, it’s the directors.
The graphic novel template by Simon Stålenhag is not a problem: the author did not create a sequel, but the Russo brothers’ adaptation is so loose and independent anyway that another template would not be absolutely necessary. Strictly speaking, there is only one real obstacle for part 2.
For The Electric State 2, there is only one hurdle
The Electric State needs to be a streaming success to justify its monstrous budget. Popular stars such as Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, the visually stunning film, and a story that is intended to appeal to various age groups and genders from the outset, all point to good viewing figures.
Nevertheless, The Electric State could also be a flop with Netflix subscribers: the devastating reviews could deter many from giving the movie a chance. Besides, the Russo brothers have already delivered The Gray Man, an ultra-expensive Netflix blockbuster that received mixed reactions at best. There has been radio silence on plans for sequels and spin-offs for two years.
The The Electric State ending hints at how part 2 should continue.
But even if a sequel is not certain, the Russos have already teased a detail that will whet the appetite for part 2: one of the final scenes of The Electric State already hints at where the story of the sequel would pick up. Spoiler alert!
To win the fight against tech billionaire Skate (Stanley Tucci), Michelle (Brown) makes a momentous decision: she turns off the machine that keeps her brother Christopher (Woody Norman) alive, causing Skate’s robot army to collapse and Michelle’s fellow campaigners to win the final battle.
The little Cosmo robot that previously housed Christopher’s spirit has now become obsolete. In a subsequent scene, he is already lying on a scrap heap. But then, surprisingly, the robot rises again: has a part of Christopher’s spirit survived? Or is someone else now controlling the machine? The film no longer provides an answer, but the foundation for a new story has been laid.
When is The Electric State 2 coming to Netflix?
Whether Netflix will request a sequel will be determined by the success of the film in the coming weeks. It is difficult to say at the moment when The Electric State 2 will be released. Both the Russo brothers and their cast are considered to be very busy and booked up for years. A release date before 2027 is unlikely.
