Nach Adolescence, another series about children on the psychological precipice, tops the Netflix charts. The true crime format reports on young influencers under parental duress.
TikTok will make me rich. This is not only the thought of some young influencers, but also of their parents. The three-part true crime series Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing shows the depths to which a mother plunges her daughter to guarantee online success. Following Adolescence, it is the second Netflix series in quick succession about the cruel influences to which children are subject.
Following Adolescence on Netflix: True crime series Bad Influence is a worldwide hit
Bad Influence tells the true story of young influencer Piper Rockelle and her mother Tiffany Smith. Under Smith’s influence, Piper and her friends quickly become extremely famous: her daughter alone soon has more than 10 million followers on YouTube. And eventually earns between $300,000 and $500,000 per month.
And all of this with videos and posts about a child’s life that has been rehearsed down to the smallest detail: As the trailer for Bad Influence shows, the group, under Smith’s control, made up to 15 videos a day. Pressure, stress and anxiety apparently determined much of their work. And anyone who wanted to quit quickly became the victim of a hate campaign by the ambitious manager.
Bad Influence not only sheds light on the fate of an individual, but also shines a spotlight on child influencers in general: How do parents deal with the fact that their daughter or son is suddenly earning a hundred times their own salary? Often enough, the child finds themselves exposed to a dark pull that is not unlike that of adolescence: here, too, terrible consequences arise when the malleable young psyche falls into the hands of the wrong people.
Bad Influence is already a big Netflix hit: While the true crime format currently ranks 4th in Germany, it tops the charts in 33 other countries, according to FlixPatrol. In our country, it is only separated from the top spot by How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), Pulse and Adolescence.
This is what the current Netflix series charts look like:
- 1. How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) – Season 4
- 2. Pulse
- 3. Adolescence
- 4. Bad Influence
- 5. Devil May Cry
- 6. Unicorn Academy
- 7. Handbook of a chaperone
