Film plot and background

In the film adaptation of the young adult book of the same name by Lene Kaaberbøl, 12-year-old Clara finds out that she has a very special ability.

Clara (Gerda Lie Kaas) is actually a normal teenager. At 12 years old, she has other things on her mind than old legends and fairy tales. This changes when one day she is attacked and scratched by a black cat. Suddenly Clara finds out that she has the ability to talk to animals. She is a wild witch and a very special one at that: For her blood can bring the ancient evil witch Bravita back to life.

To be prepared for her adventures as a wild witch, Clara is introduced to the secrets of witches by her aunt Isa (Sonja Richter). Together with her friends Kahla (Vera Mi Fernandez Bachmann) and Oscar (Albert Werner Rønhard), Clara dives into the legendary world of the wild witches. Of course, it helps immensely that she can converse with all the animals, who often know much more than humans.

“Wild witch” backgrounds

With the “Wild Witch” series of novels, Danish author Lene Kaaberbøl has also celebrated success in Germany. No wonder that a film adaptation was not long in coming. The fantasy adventure for young people is directed by Kaspar Munk (“The Time Forger”). The leading role is played by the young Danish newcomer Gerda Lie Kaas, who makes her feature film debut with “Wildhexe”.

If the first part, based on the book “Wild Witch – The Trial by Fire”, proves successful, the novels will provide enough material for sequels. Lene Kaaberbøl has continued the series with the books “Wild Witch – The Hawk’s Message”, “Wild Witch – Chimaera’s Revenge”, “Wild Witch – Blood Sister” and “Wild Witch – The Labyrinth of the Past”. The book series concludes with the last volume “Wild Witch – The Promise”.
