With “Gen V”, a second live-action series from “The Boys” universe will soon be available on Amazon Prime Video. Alongside familiar characters from the main series, there will also be an extra dose of bloody violence and wacky humour.
Amazon has released the first trailer for “The Boys: Gen V” – and it will remind all “The Boys” fans of the mother series in the best possible sense. This is not only ensured by the guest appearances of three well-known characters: The super-fast Supe A-Train (Jesse T. Usher) is there as well as Vought president Ashley (Colby Minifie) and “star director” Adam Bourke (P.J. Byrne). Above all, the trailer for the spin-off series promises just as much bloody violence and wry humour.
However, the preview does not reveal much about the story of “Gen V”. What is known, however, is that the spin-off is set at a university for young people with superpowers, the Godolkin University For Crimefighting, and that the budding supes there have to compete against each other in a series of competitions in the style of “The Tribute to Panem”. That probably explains the many, many gory scenes in the trailer…
“THE BOYS” MEETS “THE MUPPETS “
.. but nowhere near what role the Muppets-like characters in “Gen V” play in this. Presumably it is a series-within-a-series, a mixture of “Sesame Street”, the puppet musical “Avenue Q” (here: Avenue V) and the children’s programme “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”. The latter is probably best known in Germany from “The Marvelous Mr. Rogers” with Tom Hanks, but in “Gen V” Jason Ritter slips into a similar role, complete with Mr. Rogers memorial cardigan.
Ritter (“Parenthood”) is one of three new additions to “Gen V” that were announced in the course of the trailer release. The others are Clancy Brown (“The Shawshank Redemption”), who is briefly seen holding a gun in the trailer, and “Supernatural” star Alexander Calvert, who, according to the preview, is likely to play a Godolkin student.
In addition to Jesse T. Usher, Colby Minifie, P.J. Byrne and the three newcomers, “The Boys: Gen V” also features Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sean Patrick Thomas, among others. Sinclair should probably be something like the main character of the spin-off, after all she is in most of the scenes in the trailer, and was also briefly seen in “The Boys” season 3.
“The Boys: Gen V” will start in 2023, probably in the summer, on Amazon Prime Video. After that, it will continue with “The Boys” season 4, which is currently already being filmed.
