Probably the most popular Christmas film among Germans by far is available now.

For many Germans there is no Christmas without it: This is not a Hollywood film à la “Kevin – Allein zu Haus” or “Schöne Bescherung”, but a European fairy tale classic, which will celebrate its 50th (!) anniversary next year…

We are in the middle of Advent and many film fans are probably already working through their annual watchlist of Christmas films – and perhaps even adding one or two (such as “Christmas Bloody Christmas”, “Violent Night” or the “Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special”). But no film enjoys such great popularity in Germany as “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”.

In the Internet age, it has long been a tradition that by the beginning of December at the latest, overviews of all the broadcast dates of the fairy tale classic can be found everywhere on the net. After all, numerous broadcasters rely on Václav Vorlíček’s Christmas cult year after year. The disadvantage: Despite the multitude of options, in the end you have to stick to the given broadcast date – and then possibly even put up with commercial breaks. Not this year: “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” is now included in the Amazon Prime Video subscription.

And in the (unlikely) event that you’re getting tired of the 70s adaptation, it might be worth your while to check out the latest adaptation of the material for a change: The “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” remake from 2021 is currently available completely free of charge (with advertising) on Amazon Prime Video.

The remake can’t quite keep up with the ever-popular original. However, it is exciting to see how the material has been adapted half a century later.

Are you still looking for the perfect films for the holidays? Then it’s worth taking a look at the FILMSTARTS All-Time Ranking.

In addition to “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” (4th place), you’ll find not only universally acclaimed cult hits like “The Spirits I Called” (13th place) and original classics like “Die Feuerzangenbowle” (2nd place), but also a number of current productions – from Netflix’s “Klaus” (7th place) to the zombie musical “Anna and the Apocalypse” (9th place).
