Where does the journey lead in “Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets”, the third part of the “Harry Potter” spin-off series by author J.K. Rowling? While the first film was set in New York and the second in Paris, fans are also in for a magical journey in the next sequel, which opens a new chapter in the battle between Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and the sinister Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen). Will the last secrets of Albus Dumbledore finally be revealed? For example, why Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) is really his relative Aurelius Dumbledore?
Fans of the magical film series have had to be patient for a long time: After the announcement that Johnny Depp will no longer portray Grindelwald, the planned theatrical release on 11 November 2021 of Fantastic Beasts 3 was postponed. The new Grindelwald replacement in Mads Mikkelsen was quickly found and the new cinema release date is 7 April 2022. In our film review you can find out why the third part is the best in the series. Gellert Grindelwald is up to his mischief once again. The dark wizard plans to establish a dictatorship of wizards over Muggles. Grindelwald regards all non-magical beings as inferior. He is by no means alone in this view – among the wizards, Grindelwald has powerful supporters who are tired of hiding from the Muggles and hiding their abilities. But war cannot be the right solution.
On behalf of the young Albus Dumbledore, the magical zoologist Newt Scamander therefore sets out to hunt Grindelwald. As before, Scamander is supported by the No-Maj Jacob (Dan Fogler), his brother Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner) and, of course, the smart Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston). Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), Tina’s sister, changed sides and now stands by Grindelwald. A new addition is Professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks (Jessica Williams), who teaches at the North American Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – the same school Tina attended. Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam) stands by the group, as does Newt’s assistant Bunty (Victoria Yeates). An important role is also played by the International Confederation of Wizards, whose head Anton Vogel (Oliver Masucci) must make an important decision in the face of Grindelwald.
“Fantastic Beasts 3” – Cast
Not only the makers behind the camera ensure continuity within the film series, but also the great cast around the main actors Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”) and Jude Law (“Captain Marvel”). In “Fantastic Beasts 3”, Katherine Waterston (“Logan Lucky”), Alison Sudol (“DIG”) and Dan Fogler (“Free Birds – Eat Us Another Day”) as well as Ezra Miller (“Justice League”) will of course be back.
Comedian and actress Jessica Williams is also confirmed as a newcomer, as is German actor Oliver Masucci, who attracted worldwide attention with the Netflix series “Dark” and can be seen here as the head of the international confederation of wizards. Richard Coyle (“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) also joins the cast. As revealed in the first trailer, he plays Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus’ brother. A leak from the “Fantastic Beasts 3” set could explain how important his role is for the franchise. There was also a swap in the role of antagonist Grindelwald, so that Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”) will now embody the tyrannical dark wizard.
