After West Side Story, Steven Spielberg’s next film is already on the horizon. With The Fabelmans, the director delivers a very special coming-of-age story
It wasn’t even a year ago that West Side Story opened in cinemas. With the remake of the classic musical of the same name, Steven Spielberg fulfilled a personal dream. The result is a stirring masterpiece that is the expression of pure cinema in all its furious and elegant movement.
Spielberg’s next film is even more personal: The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story that takes us back to 1950s America. Here, young Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) grows up between family conflicts and the magic of the moving image.
First trailer for Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans
The Fabelmans had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the weekend and received very positive reviews from critics – so positive, in fact, that the film is being given a great chance at the next Academy Awards. The trailer shows why: Spielberg has made a declaration of love to the cinema.
He is not alone in this. In the awards season, Spielberg is likely to have competition in this field from two films, because Sam Mendes and Damien Chazelle have also made cinema declarations of love. On the one hand there’s Empire of Light, on the other Babylon, a foray into 1920s Hollywood.
