Jannis Niewöhner as Siegfried and Gijs Naber as Hagen von Tronje lead the cast of “Hagen”. The names make it clear: it will be an adaptation of the Nibelungen saga. A “fantasy epic” is planned, which will run in the cinema as well as a streaming series.
The people behind “Hagen” will hardly be able (or want) to resist comparisons with “Lord Of The Rings” and “Game Of Thrones”, because they are also planning a big fantasy epic. Constantin Film and RTL are working together on “Hagen” – and as the title suggests, it will be a new interpretation of the Song of the Nibelungs. This will then run as a film in the cinema – both in Germany and internationally – and also as a six-part streaming series. The series will then be shown here on RTL+. RTL also has the subsequent free TV rights for the cinema film and the streaming series.
Now those responsible have announced the first cast members and published a first picture showing the stars in their costumes. You can see the four main characters in our article picture above. From left to right they are:
- the German star Jannis Niewöhner as the legendary dragon slayer Siegfried.
- the hitherto theatre and TV star Lilja van der Zwaag in her cinema debut as his love Kriemhild.
- the Dutchman Gijs Naber, also known from international films such as “The Story of My Wife”, who embodies Hagen von Tronje, the central character here.
- “The Pass” creep Dominic Marcus Singer, who rounds off the quartet of leading actors as King Gunter.
In addition to these four, Rosalinde Mynster (Brunhild), Jördis Triebel (Ute) and Jörg Hartmann (Dankrat) have been engaged for other roles. The directors are Cyrill Boss and Philipp Stennert, whose most recent work includes the series “Der Pass”.
WHAT “HAGEN” IS ABOUT
In “Hagen”, the master-at-arms Hagen von Tronje, who is often seen as a villain in adaptations of the Nibelungen saga, is brought into focus. He dutifully serves the kingdom and suppresses his love for Kriemhild, the daughter of the old king Dankrat. But then the legendary dragon-slayer Siegfried appears and causes trouble, so here he provides the antagonist.
When the young and inexperienced Gunter takes over the kingdom after his father’s death, he trusts Siegfried more and more and finally even asks him to help him marry the dangerous Valkyrie Brunhild. As a result, Hagen slips more and more into the sidelines and also sees the kingdom he protects in danger. And then Kriemhild also falls in love with his new adversary Siegfried…
