A new “Cloverfield” film is in development – and it’s the next one.

After four years since the release of “The Cloverfield Paradox”, a fourth installment of the monster series has been officially confirmed – to be directed by acclaimed Iranian director Babak Anvari (“Under The Shadow”).

Time is running out: it has now been 14 (!) years since “Cloverfield” was highly successful in cinemas after a terrific marketing campaign. With “10 Cloverfield Lane” and “The Cloverfield Paradox”, two sequels were to follow that could no longer generate the hype of the first, but were definitely worth a look for genre lovers. After four years in which it has been quiet around the monster universe, we now have the official confirmation:

“Cloverfield 4” will be directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, who won a lot of critical praise with “Under The Shadow” in 2016 and has since become one of the most interesting indie directors of the moment. With “Wounds” and “I Came By”, both released via Netflix, the director has already been able to expand his portfolio. The next film is “Cloverfield 4”, which is currently in development at Paramount Pictures.

“CLOVERFIELD 4” – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

With Babak Anvari, we have in any case secured an artist who has an extraordinary flair for creeping horror and the creation of an immensely dense, often oppressive atmosphere. Cloverfield 4″ is also written by Joe Barton, who also wrote the screenplay for “The Ritual”, a rather frightening horror film from 2017. These two names alone make it quite clear that the upcoming “Cloverfield” film will probably move more in the direction of horror.

This is nothing new, however, as all previous “Cloverfield” films have worked with horror elements. What is interesting, however, is that the “Cloverfield” series follows a very experimental approach and has always tried to make each individual part as different as possible from its predecessor. Thus, “Cloverfield” was once a found-footage survival thriller, “10 Cloverfield Lane” a haunting chamber drama and “The Cloverfield Paradox” more classic sci-fi space fare.

“Cloverfield” is produced – as usual – by J.J. Abrams. Also involved in the project are Hannah Minghella (“Lou”) and Jon Cohen as producers and Bryan Burk (“Super 8”), Matt Reeves (“The Batman”) and Drew Goddard (“Bad Times At The El Royale”) as executive producers. It is not clear at this time when filming is scheduled to begin.
