The Walking Dead has produced a series villain for the ages in Negan. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, however, was on the verge of saying goodbye to the iconic role.
The Walking Dead will soon say its final goodbye after 11 seasons. But Negan’s story is far from over and will continue in the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City next year. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has now revealed that there was almost no reunion with the iconic ex-villain and wisecracker, who he has portrayed for six years now.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan wanted to leave The Walking Dead behind
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Jeffrey Dean Morgan talked about his return to The Walking Dead: Dead City series and original concerns about not wrapping up Negan’s story just yet. Because: many fans wanted a proper conclusion to the zombie saga. He too would have preferred a final conclusion, giving all the characters an ending:
“If you would have told me a year ago that I was going to do this, I would have said, ‘No way. I’m going to end this and move away.’ […] I think ending The Walking Dead and walking away from the show would have been a noble thing for all of us. “
In the spin-off following the series finale, Negan and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are drawn to New York City after their conflict with the Commonwealth. In the metropolis sealed off from the outside world, millions of undead are said to roam the urban canyons. Sounds pretty epic, doesn’t it? At least Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been able to change his mind about the concept:
“But the story was so good and so worth telling that I just couldn’t say no. And I felt empowered and wanted to go ahead after all. “
What Maggie and Negan are looking for in Manhattan in the first place and why these two of all people go off together still remains a mystery. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, however, already assures us fans that an exciting new chapter in The Walking Dead cosmos awaits us:
“What’s really great is that Lauren and I are doing this together, and [showrunner Eli Jorné] has written these damn good stories. Believe me, I wouldn’t have continued in this role otherwise. “
Negan and Maggie aren’t the only characters guaranteed to survive The Walking Dead finale. Next year also sees the launch of a spin-off to Daryl’s new adventures, who somehow ends up in France after the series ends. A series about Michonne and Rick Grimes, meanwhile, will finally provide answers to some mysteries the zombie franchise has been building for years.
