No Scooby-Doo! film has ever been allowed to show it – but now it is.

For years Scooby-Doo! fans have speculated about it. Now it’s official: Velma is queer! The latest film in the series gives the character two scenes in which this becomes more than obvious.

Trick or treat Scooby-Doo!, the latest film in the Scooby-Doo! franchise, is making history. For over 50 years, Mystery AG has been experiencing exciting adventures with (supposedly) supernatural antagonists. Now the sexual orientation of one of the five main characters has been confirmed: Velma is queer.

For Scooby-Doo! fans, this revelation comes as little surprise. That Velma is attracted to other women is an open secret. Until now, however, it was not allowed to be spoken. With the release of Trick-or-Treat Scooby-Doo! that changes, as two scenes from the animated film prove.

Scooy-Doo! milestone: Velma is now officially queer

On their latest adventure, the members of Mystery AG meet Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), the head of the organisation responsible for many monster costumes in the Scooy-Doo! universe. When it comes to eye contact with Velma (Kate Micucci), it becomes clear that there are big feelings at play with the ghost hunter.

In a later scene, Coco puts her hand on Velma’s shoulder, which is another obvious clue for many fans. It is the first time in Scooy-Doo! history that a film has clearly foregrounded Velma’s queerness.

Not only for fans, but also for many creatives, Velma’s sexual orientation has been clear for years. However, they have never been able to portray it. The most famous example was provided by James Gunn two years ago when he told that Velma was a lesbian in his script for the first Scooby-Doo! movie – a fact that met with resistance from the studio and is therefore not addressed in the finished film.

Sweet or Sour Scooby-Doo! thus takes an important, long overdue step. It is unclear when and how the film will come to Germany. In the USA it is released on 4 October 2022 on the streaming service HBO Max.
