The people in Germany are really into cinema right now. Well over 100,000 tickets were sold for four different films this weekend, with one German title beating them all in the end…
Before the weekend, there was a lot of talk about whether the horror sensation “Smile” would also leave the genre reboot “Halloween Ends” behind in German cinemas. In the end, this question could be answered clearly. Although “Halloween Ends” outperformed its predecessor “Halloween Kills” with a good 165,000 tickets sold, “Smile” simply remains a phenomenon. Because more and more people are going to the horror secret from week to week (although the “secret” should actually have been deleted long ago) – that is completely sensational and unusual, when otherwise ticket sales are declining from week to week.
But after a little more than 100,000 at the start and almost 220,000 on the second weekend, 245,000 cinema-goers bought tickets for Parker Finn’s horror film on the third weekend, which we recommended to you in advance in a preview. By the way, the horror film continues to be successful worldwide and has already grossed around 140 million dollars (with a budget of allegedly only 17 million dollars). Smile” was originally intended to be a streaming-only release – until they changed their minds after surprisingly strong test screenings. For this decision, one should currently pat oneself on the back on a daily basis.
“THE SCHOOL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS 2” BEATS THEM ALL
But not enough for the top position in the cinema charts. But it wasn’t the anime mega-hit “One Piece Film: Red” that edged out “Smile”, as one might have suspected after its outstanding start on Thursday. Although “One Piece Film: Red” is also proving to be a huge success in Germany and attracted an impressive 230,000 people to the cinemas on the opening weekend, that is “only” enough for third place. At the top is a German film that is now well on its way to becoming a long-running hit.
With around 265,000 tickets sold, “The School of Magical Beasts 2” made further gains on its third weekend and attracted more people to the cinemas than any other film in recent days. With over 1.25 million cinema-goers, the children’s film sequel is approaching the top 10 of the 2022 annual charts (currently “Sing 2” is in 10th place with 1.45 million). With the stable interest, the sequel should continue to see many ticket sales in the coming weeks.
After “The School of Magical Beasts 2”, “Smile”, “One Piece Film: Red” and “Halloween Ends”, “Ticket to Paradise” closes the Top 5 and has probably sold just under 100,000 tickets (projections assume 95,000 to 98,000). Next week, the DC blockbuster “Black Adam” with superstar Dwayne Johnson could stir up the action.
