For Simon Brückner’s documentary, the conflict-ridden Alternative for Germany party provides exclusive insights at municipal, regional and state level over a period of years. Not only are the power struggles within the party revealed, but also how already the party’s new generation has visibly broken with the Federal Republic system.
Instead of focusing on interviews and assessments, insights are given into the back rooms, at party conferences and seemingly banal everyday conversations. Likewise, it is outlined how right-wing political international groups network with each other to achieve their goals.
Over a period from 2019 to 2021, more than 500 hours of raw footage is produced in consent by all the people involved. The AfD had no say in the final cut. Brückner pursues an analytical, neutral point of view. The filmmaker acts as a silent guest and observer and leaves it up to the audience to classify the scenes themselves. Together with a team of two, a film was made that reveals the everyday grey areas of the party beyond the excitement of the media.

Since the Alternative for Germany party was founded in 2013, fears of a shift to the right in society have been on the rise. Although the party itself is criticised for its statements, it has 32,000 members nationwide (as of January 2021). In 2017, the party entered the German Bundestag as the third strongest party. In 2021, the AfD ended up in 5th place in the Bundestag election.
The world premiere of the documentary “A German Party” took place at a gala premiere at the Berlinale 2022. The regular theatrical release is on 16 June 2022 and has been released from the age of 12.
