Film plot and background
Thriller about a group of teenagers whose supposed escape room adventure turns into a bitter fight for survival.
When 16-year-old Adrian (Marven Suarez Brinkert) hears about a competition in an Escape Room in Hamburg, the budding social media star decides to take on the challenge. Together with his girlfriend Nancy (Emilia Djalili) and his best friends Neil (Thapelo Mashiane), Dustin (Elmo Anton Stratz) and Luke (Gustav Strunz), he wants to take part in the promising thrill. But the supposed recreational fun soon turns out to be a big nightmare.
The scientists Iris (Raffaela Kraus) and Kai (Claudiu Mark Draghici) have merely lured the five friends into the Escape Room under a pretext. In reality, the room is a research facility where a behavioural analysis experiment is to be carried out on the young people. The artificial intelligence “Kira”, programmed by the scientists, puts the friends to the test and confronts them with their personal problems and fears in the most macabre way. The young people fight for their friendship and ultimately even for life and death.

“The Social Experiment” – background, cast, cinema release
Pascal Schröder (“Nüchtern”) directed the suspenseful thriller. As one of the first Germans, Schröder, together with his team, the screenwriter Raffaela Kraus (in the film in the role of the scientist Iris), as well as the producers Andreas Schlieter and Kai Steinmetz, resorted to a virtual reality LED studio. We already know this technology from American series like “The Mandelorian”. It replaces the classic green screen with large LED screens, which made scenes on the moon or in an ice desert possible in just a few days of shooting.
In the leading roles, the five young newcomers Marven Suarez Brinkert, Emilia Djalili, Elmo Anton Stratz, Thapelo Mashiane and Gustav Strunz are convincing for the first time on the big screen.
The thriller “The Social Experiment” will be shown in German cinemas from 27 October 2022
