Witch hunt in contemporary America: clever trailer for the brutal

by Tommy

At first glance, “Witch Hunt” is a dystopian fantasy horror. But if you look and listen more closely, you will already recognise in the trailer a more profound allegory of questionable developments within current US society.

“Witch Hunt” is set in an America where witches are real, but they are hunted mercilessly. Anyone identified as a witch can be interned by the authorities or liquidated outright. Claire (Gideon Adlon), a high school student, lives in this world and leads a normal life among her friends.

At home, however, things are different. Her mother Martha (Elizabeth Mitchell) has turned the family home into a shelter for those persecuted by the BWI (Bureau of Witchcraft Investigation). Together with other activists, she tries to get the defenceless women and girls secretly to Mexico, where they are granted asylum. Nevertheless, more and more witches are being picked up in her area and simply killed by the government.

Things get really personal for Claire when Fiona (Abigail Cowen), who is her age, and her little sister Shae (Echo Campbell) arrive at the house. They have been separated from their mother, who is suspected of being a witch, and must now go into hiding without her. For a new law is currently up for a vote that will also strip all children of persecuted people of their civil rights and set them up for firing …

After various festival screenings in North America and Europe, “Witch Hunt” will be released here on Blu-ray and DVD on 2 December 2022. Both formats with FSK-16 clearance can already be pre-ordered from the usual providers, such as Amazon, among others:

FROM “WONDER WOMAN” TO “WITCH HUNT “

Screenplay and direction are by Elle Callahan. “Witch Hunt” is the American’s second feature film directorial effort after “Head Count”. She previously worked in assistant roles on sound and special effects on blockbusters such as “Avengers 2: Age Of Ultron”, “Ant-Man” and “Wonder Woman”.

The three main roles in Callahan’s film were played by Gideon Adlon (“Blumhouse’s The Witches’ Club”), Abigail Cowen (“Fate: The Winx Saga”, “Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina”) and “Lost” star Elizabeth Mitchell, all of whom are experienced in the supernatural genre.

Ashley Bell (“Voices – Voices from Beyond”), Christian Camargo (“See – Empire of the Blind”) and Assaf Cohen (“Weeds”) were also in front of the camera for other parts.
