“House Of The Dragon” Episode 10: The Death Scene at the End & Rhaenyra’s

by Dennis

Spoilers for the season finale of “House Of The Dragon”! In episode 10 of the “Game Of Thrones” prequel, we see Aemond’s dragon Vhagar kill Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax in flight. An accident? Definitely an event with consequences…

The first season of “Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon” is over – and has claimed another victim in the last minutes: 14-year-old Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault). Those familiar with the original “Fire and Blood” by George R.R. Martin may have known that this deadly confrontation occurs in episode 10: Lucerys dies in a fight between his dragon Arrax and Aemond Targaryen’s (Ewan Mitchell) much larger dragon Vhagar.

Aemond and Luke, as he is called by his mother Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), are sent to Storm’s End / Storm Cape to Borror Baratheon (Roger Evans) to win over House Baratheon to their respective sides. Aemond is successful in this – but that is not enough for him: he asks Lucerys to cut out his own eye, because he lost an eye because of Lucerys at that time. By the way, in Aemond’s empty eye socket there is a sapphire, in case you were wondering. Lucerys flies off on Arrax, Aemond follows him on Vhagar and a chase ensues in which the young men soon can’t control their dragons…

IN THE SERIES AN ACCIDENT, IN THE BOOK PROBABLY DELIBERATE

Arrax attacks Vhagar with fire, though Lucerys tries to restrain him. For the giant Vhagar, however, such a small stabbing flame to the face is hardly dangerous – but he feels provoked. Although his dragon rider Aemond shouts “No!” several times and demands obedience, Vhagar eats Arrax and his rider Lucerys in flight. Aemond looks dismayed and distraught – in the series, Lucerys’ death is clearly marked as a tragic accident.

This is different in the book by George R.R. Martin: there it seems to have been Aemond’s intention to kill Lucerys in the dragon duel in the air. In any case, it is an accident with terrible consequences… Because when Daemon (Matt Smith) steps up to the fire with Rhaenyra in the last scene and tells her about the death of her son (we don’t hear the words, but her reaction makes it clear what it’s about), the queen makes a decision.

And this decision can be seen on her face in the last shot of the episode “The Black Queen”: If Rhaenyra has so far hesitated to go to war against rival King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and the Greens around Otto and Alicent Hightower / Hohenturm in order not to turn the kingdom into a “kingdom of ashes and bones”, her decision is now firm. The death of their son Lucerys is the straw that breaks the camel’s back: this means war.

THE CIVIL WAR BEGINS

Rhaenyra’s decision, though wordless in the season finale, is confirmed by the series creators in the “Inside The Episode” video on YouTube: “If having Aegon crowned king didn’t start the war, having one of the queen’s sons killed definitely will now.”

So in season 2, we’ll see the civil war called Dance of the Dragons after season 1 told the back story to it. Season 2 of House Of The Dragon will start filming in early 2023, with the next episodes not expected to start until 2024.
