Just when it was confirmed that “Lost” and “Watchmen” creator Damon Lindelof was working on a new “Star Wars” film, a few possible details were added. The project will probably take place after the sequel trilogy.

While the “Star Wars” series is going from strength to strength, the saga is currently taking a break after episodes 7, 8 and 9 in the cinema. But that doesn’t mean that behind the scenes they aren’t already hard at work on further screen adventures from the galaxy far, far away. In fact, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy is currently having a whole series of potential “Star Wars” films developed by very well-known directors, writers and producers (even if that doesn’t mean we’ll actually get to see all of them one day).
The latest “Star Wars” project comes from three-time Emmy-winning series veteran Damon Lindelof (“Lost”, “The Leftovers”, “Watchmen”), who has teamed up with “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. As the Hollywood Reporter has now revealed, Lindelof also has the up-and-coming Justin Britt-Gibson as a writing partner, who has previously been involved in Guillermo del Toro’s vampire series “The Strain” and the parallel-world series “Counterpart”, among others.
In addition, the Hollywood Reporter also wants to know where the new film fits into the “Star Wars” timeline…
“STAR WARS: EPISODE 10” – MORE OR LESS

Official details on the newly announced film are not yet available. However, the well-connected and usually very reliable Hollywood Reporter has tapped its industry sources to shed at least some light on the matter. According to this, Damon Lindelof’s “Star Wars” project is to be set after the events of “Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker”. So will the whole thing be something like “Episode 10” of the Star Wars saga? Here the answer is “quite clearly” no.
The film is not intended to be a direct continuation of the Skywalker saga, but rather to function as a stand-alone story. Nevertheless, it is of course also a kind of continuation, in which characters from the sequel trilogy are also to appear. This could mean a reunion with Resistance heroes like Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) or Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). If the films are successful, they could be directly linked to the storyline, so that we could possibly expect another trilogy (even if that is not the plan from the start).
DEVELOPED IN SECRET
Although work on it has only just been made official, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the new “Star Wars” film has been in development for months – which explains why rumours of Lindelof’s involvement in the popular franchise started doing the rounds over half a year ago.
After this year’s Star Wars Celebration at the end of May, there was supposedly a first secret meeting of an entire team of writers, including Patrick Somerville (“The Leftovers”, “Station Eleven”), Rayna McClendon (“Willow”, “Obi-Wan Kenobi”) and Andy Greenwald (“Briarpatch”). Possibly “The Mandalorian” and “Clone Wars” creator Dave Filoni was also present as a consultant (this is not confirmed, however). Afterwards, Lindelof and Britt-Gibson took on the main responsibility for the script work.
“STAR WARS” NOT IN CINEMAS AGAIN UNTIL 2025?
It is still unclear when the continuation of the “Star Wars” saga will be released. Currently, it is probably generally up in the air again when the series will return to the big screen. While December 2023 was the last target for the next “Star Wars” film, the Hollywood Reporter is now talking about the end of 2025 as the earliest possible release window for a new cinema project.
A further delay would not come as too much of a surprise, as it is apparently still not clear which of the many films that are still in very early stages of development will be released first, or at all. In addition to the Lindelof contribution, potential candidates include the “Rogue Squadron” film by “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins, the still possible trilogy by “Star Wars 8” maker Rian Johnson and “Star Wars” adventures by Taika Waititi and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige.
