It has been rather quiet around the Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan in recent years, but that will soon change and how. The first trailer for “Pathaan” already shows that SRK is back with spectacular action.
While there is no detailed synopsis for “Pathaan” yet, we already know that Shah Rukh Khan plays the title character, who is a kind of super-spy for the R&AW (something like the Indian CIA) and must save his country from a major threat. As a one-man army, he’ll probably take on a lot of bad guys in the process, there will be explosions and, of course, cool poses.
A NEW BENCHMARK FOR INDIAN ACTION CINEMA
The action is expected to be spectacular in the first Indian film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Director Siddharth Anand, who already directed the action mega-hit “War” with Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, expressed the hope to create a new benchmark for action cinema in India with the film – and that is an announcement.
After all, Indian cinema with its penchant for cool slow-motion shots and exuberant, completely crazy ideas is currently setting standards worldwide – especially in the creative interplay of CGI and stunts. A film like “RRR”, which is now available on Netflix, has therefore long since become one of the must-see titles of the year in Hollywood as well.
THE BIG COMEBACK OF SHAH RUKH KHA
“Pathaan” is also attracting a lot of interest because it marks the comeback of Indian cinema’s biggest star. Shah Rukh Khan has taken a break for almost four years. After his most recent guest appearances in “Laal Singh Chaddha” (which is already available on Netflix shortly after its cinema release) and in the fantasy superhero blockbuster “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva” (which is already available on Disney+ shortly after its cinema release), “Pathaan” is his first leading role after his break.

He will be joined by other stars of Indian cinema with whom he has also appeared in front of the camera – most notably Deepika Padukone (“xXx 3”, “Chennai Express”) and John Abraham (“Ek Villain Returns”, “Dhoom”). In addition, Salman Khan will also make an appearance, reprising his role as R&AW agent Tiger from 2012’s “Ek Tha Tiger – Mission Love” and the 2017 sequel “Tiger Zinda Hai”.
The films, like the aforementioned “War”, are also part of a franchise. However, this is only very loosely connected, and is actually mainly linked by the fact that the main characters work for R&AW. So “Pathaan” will also be understood in this way (and one can look forward to allegedly two credits scenes at once, which probably announce “Tiger 3” among other things.
“Pathaan” is scheduled to be released in cinemas not only in India but worldwide on 25 January 2023. Even in Germany, where more than three dozen Indian films were released in 2022 alone and enjoyed increasing popularity, some screens should then show “Pathaan” – a good thing the visuals in the trailer and the shooting with IMAX cameras also promise a film for the (biggest possible) screen.
