Five years ago, the relentless thriller Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen was released. Now the film is surprisingly getting a sequel.
With Wind River, director and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan proved his talent for extremely suspenseful thrillers five years ago. In icy images, we follow Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as they solve the murder of a young woman on the titular reservation. Now, surprisingly, the story continues.
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel Wind River: The Next Chapter is already in pre-production. Filming is scheduled to start in January 2023. Sheridan, however, is not involved in the project, just like Renner and Olsen. Instead, we can expect some changes.
Wind River: The Next Chapter is more spin-off than sequel
At the centre of the story of Wind River: The Next Chapter is Chip Hanson, embodied by Martin Sensmeier. The character already appeared in the first part: Chip is the brother of the murdered woman. In the meantime, he works as a tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game Administration and is asked for help by the FBI.

Kari Skogland serves as director on Wind River: The Next Chapter. She is best known for her work on notable series such as The Walking Dead and The Handmaid’s Tale. She also directed all six episodes of the Marvel series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which premiered on Disney+ last year.
The script has also been written by two names with a wealth of series experience: Patrick Massett and John Zinman. Together they have written various episodes of Friday Night Lights and The Blacklist. Their biggest hits in cinema include Gold and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The Scandal That Doomed Wind River
Sheridan had written Wind River to raise awareness of the fact that many indigenous women are raped and murdered without the public knowing. Ultimately, however, the film was overshadowed by scandal: Wind River was released shortly before the Weinstein scandal.
