After 11 seasons, 12 years and 177 episodes, The Walking Dead has now ended with the big series finale Rest in Peace. Of course, many fans of the first hour especially wondered if Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) would return after his exit in season 9.
For those who have already given up on the series or now just want to know if Rick will show up in the finale, here’s the answer. Spoilers for The Walking Dead series finale follow, of course.

This is how The Walking Dead brings back Rick Grimes in the series finale
The short answer first: yes, Rick Grimes does reappear in the final The Walking Dead episode. There is a five-minute epilogue at the end of the episode that also features Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) again, among others.
After being seriously injured in season 9 when he was taken away by a helicopter, Rick is seen in the series finale without shoes as well as wearing a CRM (Civic Republic Military) jacket. In order to avoid having his shoes, diary and mobile phone confiscated, he packs all the items into a backpack and throws it on a boat. Then a helicopter can be heard approaching again as the escaped Rick is ordered to surrender.

Parallel to this, Michonne can also be seen riding a horse with this very backpack. Apparently she is on her way to Rick. Off-screen, to accompany the scenes, entries are heard from the diary that Rick and Michonne kept together. They are hopeful words for their children.
Rick and Michonne return for The Walking Dead spin-off
2023 the characters will get a spin-off series together. The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne will revolve around how the two must come together. The overpowered military unit CRM, which Rick apparently had to join involuntarily, will then also play a bigger role again. An exact start for the spin-off has not yet been set.
