Netflix hit 1899: The big twist was already given away in episode 1, but

The hit series 1899 on Netflix gave away the huge twist right at the beginning – with a very well hidden hint that you surely missed.

Warning, spoilers: With 1899, dark masterminds Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have landed another Netflix hit. Packed with puzzles and big sci-fi revelations, the series delivers a rewarding experience for all fans who enjoy searching for hidden clues to later revelations. There are a few of these.

Dark already taught us to look more closely. For example, the denouement from the ending was shown long before. 1899 also reveals numerous eye-opening moments that foreshadow later revelations. The big twist was even given away in the first minutes of episode 1 – but only for a millisecond.

Hidden clue: 1899 reveals the digital simulation already in episode 1

At the end of the first season of 1899, it is revealed that all the incidents on Kerberos were not real. The consciousness of numerous main characters is in a digitally created simulation loop from which Maura (Emily Beecham) is eventually able to escape or awaken.

In the podcast conversation with Moviepilot, 1899 director Baran bo Odar revealed that he deliberately included a moment in the first episode that reveals long before the actual reveal that the Kerberos passengers must be in a digital reality.

You don’t have to search the 60-minute opening episode frame by frame for this moment. We have already found it for you. The barely noticeable moment is hidden in the scene in which the passengers gather in the dining room aboard the Kerberos and raise their cups in strange synchrony.

When we pay attention to the arm of the non-geisha Ling Yi (Isabella Wei) at this moment, something extremely disconcerting strikes us. Because for a split second, Ling’s arm movement is superimposed by a glitch. With this “error in the matrix”, 1899 exposes after only a few minutes that we are not seeing real people here.
