Sequel to cult disaster film “Twister” may have director

by Han

“Twister” is one of the cult blockbusters of the 1990s. More than 25 years later, a sequel now awaits us. And it seems that a rather interesting director has been chosen: “Minari” maker Lee Isaac Cung.
With “Twister”, “Speed” maker Jan De Bont achieved a real mega success in 1996. The disaster film, which was equipped with grandiose CGI effects for its time, brought in around 500 million US dollars. Only Roland Emmerich’s “Independence Day” was more successful that year. And even though the reviews were rather mixed at the time, “Twister” is now a real cult film that is enjoyed again and again, and not just for nostalgic reasons.

After rumours had been circulating for quite a while that a sequel was to be produced under the name “Twisters”, we now have confirmation: The sequel, which has been approached with a delay of more than 25 years, is to be filmed in spring 2023. At last it was unclear whether the deadline could be met, as a director had not yet been found. Dan Trachtenberg (“Prey”) and Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), who were originally being considered, have already cancelled.

IS THIS THE DIRECTOR OF “TWISTERS”?

In the meantime, however, a suitable filmmaker seems to have been found – and he makes the project much more interesting. Lee Isaac Chung is reportedly close to signing a contract. The director, who was nominated twice for an Academy Award for his decelerated drama “Minari”, proves to be not only interesting but also a risky choice. For the man has had nothing whatsoever to do with blockbuster cinema so far. But we can be all the more curious to see what “Twisters” will look like in the end if Chung is really on board.

Chung’s possible involvement could also mean that the script by Mark L. Smith (“The Revanent”) places a lot of emphasis on family relationships. The daughter of Helen Hunt and the now deceased Bill Paxton’s characters is to be at the centre of the story. “Twisters” is also supposed to be a drama to a large extent. Producer Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”) has also been enthusiastic about the script.

It is said that they hope to bring Helen Hunt back to reprise her role as the tornado hunter Jo from the first “Twister”. Whether this project will succeed is not yet known. Now we have to wait for the next few days to see whether the signing of Lee Issac Chung is really in the bag. After that, the project can really take off and the selection of actors can begin.
