Dwayne Johnson plays one of his best roles as a grumpy pensioner in a fantasy action thriller. The brilliantly entertaining blockbuster is on TV today.
Although Black Adam is not one of his most popular works, Dwayne Johnson’s filmography is still full of immensely entertaining movies. One of the best examples is on TV today. In Jumanji: The Next Level, the action star is at his best. As a grumpy pensioner. In the body of a muscular archaeologist.
Fantasy action on TV: Dwayne Johnson ingenious as a mucky pensioner
Because like in the predecessor Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the friends Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Martha (Morgan Turner) and Bethany (Madison Iseman) are sucked into the video game Jumanji and have to go on a new adventure in the body of their characters. More specifically, this time it’s a rescue mission: Spencer has disappeared without a trace in the game and may have fallen into the hands of the new creep Jürgen the Brutal (Rory McCann).

So his friends set out on a quest in the bodies of their avatars. These include Dr Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), Professor Oberon (Jack Black), Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart) and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan). So far, so familiar. But Jumanji 2 has a twist that gives Johnson one of his funniest roles.
For Spencer’s grandpa Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his broke ex-buddy Milo (Danny Glover) are also dragged into the game. Curmudgeon Eddie, of all people, manifests himself as the bicep titan Bravestone and thus provides some of the best scenes in the film.
Johnson is in his element here: he noticeably enjoys brushing his other role profile against the grain and playing a doddering, stubborn old man as a muscle-locker. His performance is on par with one of his best films on Netflix.
