Netflix password sharing: Streaming service puts a stop to account sharing in 2023
It was only a matter of time before Netflix put a stop to password sharing. In recent weeks and months, there have been many signs that this development is coming. In early 2023, the streaming service will get serious. More than 100 million users are expected to be affected by the new regulation.
For the time being, account sharing will only be banned in the USA. However, it is expected that Netflix will roll out its new model worldwide in the course of the next year. One of the motivations for this is the stagnating growth of the streaming service, for which paying subscribers are still the most valuable asset.
In the future, anyone who wants to subscribe to someone else’s account will have to pay extra. Most recently, an add-on was tested that allows passwords to be shared for a surcharge of three US dollars. In this case, the main account holder provides a confirmation code so that people from other households can log in.
