They enjoyed success in Once upon a Time in Hollywood, but the reunion of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie is likely to be one of the biggest flops of the year.
Films without franchise ties have a hard time at the cinema, even more so when the latest Avatar movie is sucking the attention away. Even stars like Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie are not enough of a draw. This is shown by the financial performance of La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s Hollywood orgy Babylon.
Because while Robbie and Pitt’s last film together, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, raked in hundreds of millions of dollars, their new work is likely to have trouble breaking the 20 million barrier.
How Tarantino reunion Babylon fared at the box office
Babylon just had one of its worst opening weekends ever. Between Friday and Sunday, the film grossed only $3.6 million in North America, which is shocking for several reasons. Firstly, because it cost around 80 million to make and secondly, because it was shown in over 3000 movie theatres in the US.
You might counter that snowstorms hit the States over the weekend, but even the similarly budgeted Puss in Boots: The Last Wish drew enough people out into the cold to take in $12.4 million (via Box Office Mojo ). On the other hand, this animated family film received much better reviews than Babylon and is likely to suit the tastes of festive audiences better than a Hollywood epic about coke-snorting silent film stars.
The La La Land director’s new film tells of Hollywood orgies
While Tarantino’s alternate history Once upon a Time was set in Hollywood in the late 1960s, Damien Chazelle jumps further back for his new film.
Namely, in the late 1920s, Babylon follows three people at different stages of their film careers: movie star Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), It girl Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) and assistant Manny Torres (Diego Calva) navigate the drug and sexual escapades of a dream factory on the verge of fundamental change.
When is Babylon with Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie coming to Germany?
Babylon opens in German cinemas as early as 19 January 2023. Then we can see for ourselves whether the bad reviews are justified?
