Avatar 2 is the biggest sci-fi blockbuster of the year. Visually, there can be little criticism. Story-wise, however, the film is not worth three hours, thinks our colleague Yves.
No other film have fans waited as eagerly for in 2022 as Avatar 2: The Way of Water. Few films, regardless of the year, come close to its visual power. And yet it is simply far too long for its interchangeable story. At least that’s what our colleague Yves thinks.

Sci-fi blockbuster Avatar 2 could be a lot better if it weren’t 192 minutes long
There can’t be the slightest doubt about the visual revolution of James Cameron’s work, in his opinion. But do you really have to spend over three hours in the cinema seat for it? In his opinion, that is simply too much for a story that is very simple at its core and could be told much more compactly.
Similar considerations are also made by our colleagues from FILMSTARTS in their Leinwandliebe podcast. There, Sebastian and Pascal talk with guest David Hain about the question of whether Avatar 2 is the best blockbuster of the last 13 years.
