When Avatar 2 is most likely coming to Disney+

Avatar 2 will most likely be available on Disney+ in May 2023. Half a year’s wait is quite long compared to other blockbusters from the Disney corporation (Avatar 2 was produced by 20th Century Fox). But that is exactly what Disney wants: to make money with Avatar 2 in the cinema for as long as possible. An early streaming release would run counter to this strategy. But a six-month gap was common before the pandemic.

Disney blockbusters from the studios of Marvel and Pixar hit the streaming platform only a few weeks after theatrical release during the pandemic. That won’t happen with Avatar 2, as much is expected from its theatrical release. After all, we are talking about the sequel to what is still the most successful film of all time.

The company already proved how important Avatar cinema revenues are to Disney in the autumn: when Avatar – Departure to Pandora was reworked and re-released in cinemas, Disney pulled the film from the streaming platform.

What needs to happen for Avatar 2 to come to Disney+ sooner?

Quite simply, Avatar 2 would have to perform far below expectations at the box office. The worse Avatar 2 does in the cinema, the more attractive an early exploitation on Disney+ becomes. If interest in Avatar 2 does indeed wane more quickly than expected, the company will upgrade the offerings of its streaming service with the expensive blockbuster. This is now common practice in Hollywood.

But this scenario is not all that likely: the first box-office results are not outstanding, but they are good. And films by James Cameron, i.e. Titanic or Avatar, proved to have unusually long staying power at the box office. That Avatar 2 will surf on a similar wave of success is not guaranteed, of course, but quite likely. The reviews for are good and again: we are talking about the sequel to the most successful film of all time. Don’t be surprised if your cinemas are still offering screenings for Avatar 2 in April.
