Before you watch the trailer for “Alienoid”, you should take a deep breath. It could well happen that you forget to breathe during the two minutes that are mercilessly packed with exciting moments. Enjoy your home cinema soon!
“Alienoid” is an ambitious blockbuster project from South Korea, created by “Assissination” director Dong-Hoon Choi. Before the cameras started rolling, Choi spent a whopping two and a half years tinkering with the script. After all, he not only wrote this almost two-and-a-half-hour-long epic, but also a sequel, which will be released in his home country in the summer of 2023 and will certainly come to us soon thereafter.
For logistical reasons and of course to reduce the already exorbitant costs of a budget of almost 30 million euros, both parts were shot in one go. Shooting in and around the historic town of Andong, founded over 2000 years ago, in the otherwise rural and mountainous west of the country took 13 months. For the main roles, director Choi had Korean stars such as Jun-Yeol Ryu (“Believer”), Tae-Ri Kim from the Netflix hit “Space Sweepers”, Woo-Bin Kim (“Our Blues”) and Ji-Sub So (“Battleship Island”) at his disposal.
In September 2022, the title celebrated its German premiere at the Fantasy Filmfest presented by FILMSTARTS in seven local cities. Now “Alienoid” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD as well as digitally on 20 January 2023. In addition, a lovingly designed, limited media book with 4K/UltraHD Blu-ray plus various extras such as a making-of, a 24-page colour booklet etc. will be released at the same time. All these formats with FSK-12 clearance can already be pre-ordered from online sellers such as Amazon.
THIS IS THE STORY OF “ALIENOID “
For hundreds of years, aliens have used Earth as a prison, trapping particularly dangerous creatures in the bodies of unsuspecting humans. In Seoul, the stoic Guard (Woo-Bin Kim) and his shape-shifting robot Thunder (voice in the South Korean original: Dae-Myung Kim) act as guards for the alien criminals in a huge warehouse.
Then Moon (Ji-Sub So), one of the worst malefactors, manages to escape and disappear via time travel to the year 1391. Only with the help of Guard’s foster daughter Lee Ahn (Tae-Ri Kim) do the two chaperones manage to follow him. Arriving in the 14th century, they witness the Tao mage Muruk (Jun-Yeol Ryu) in a race with Moon for a sword endowed with mystical powers.
Guard and Thunder realise that it must be an alien weapon. It could help the duo capture the fugitive. Which must happen urgently, because he is apparently planning nothing less than the extinction of the entire human race …
