The Netflix film The Sea Monster wowed critics and audiences. It won’t stop there. The animated Pirates of the Caribbean replacement will be continued.
The streaming service Netflix has made headlines in recent weeks, especially with cancellations. First the science fiction series 1899 was cancelled after only one season, then the popular animation series Inside Job followed. But there is another way, at least if the streamer is satisfied with the numbers. Because the animated adventure film The Sea Monster with some Pirates of the Caribbean vibes is getting a sequel and it won’t stop there.
More on the Netflix one-two punch for Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings fans
The Sea Monster was released in the summer of 2022 and went on to become the most watched animated film in Netflix history. That’s why director and Oscar winner Chris Williams (Baymax – Huge Robo-Boohoo) will adapt The Sea Monster 2 for the streaming service. The story of monster hunter Jacob and his little companion Maisie is to be continued. Among other things, the story is to focus on Jacob’s new responsibilities as the girl’s foster father.

Williams will tackle a second fantasy project for Netflix, however, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will be an “original fantasy [story]” with an inherently coherent world in the tradition of The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, but with the light mood of The Princess Bride.
There are no dates for either film yet, however, due to the long production time of animated films, we can assume it will be a few years before either film comes to Netflix.
The Sea Monster offers entertainment à la Pirates of the Caribbean
For hundreds of years, a war has raged between the sea monsters in the ocean and the humans who sail the seas. While the giant underwater monsters try to sink large ships, brave heroes hunt down the beasts and kill the dangerous attackers. This is also the case with the crew of Captain Crow’s “Inevitable”, which includes not least his future successor Jacob Holland. Only the threat of the “Red Bluster” has so far cut their teeth.
Meanwhile, on land, the orphan girl Maisie Brumble dreams of once going out to fight sea monsters. She sneaks aboard as a stowaway. But slaying the red monster, which has long been hunted in vain, is no easy task.
