On TV today: start of a sci-fi series that Vin Diesel helps survive.

Today on TV you can witness the start of a legendary sci-fi series starring Vin Diesel. We’re talking about Pitch Black, the start of the Riddick universe.

While Vin Diesel prepares for the launch of Fast & Furious 10 in the cinema, today on TV we can return to the film that launched his career as an action star: Pitch Black – Planet of Darkness. Before Diesel conquered the streets as Dom Toretto, he brawled his way through an oppressive sci-fi world.

Released in 2000, Pitch Black kicked off the Riddick universe, which to date includes two sequels, namely Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior (2004) and Riddick (2013). In addition, there exists an anime called Riddick: Warriors of Darkness, which acts as a bridge between parts 1 and 2.

Sci-fi action with Vin Diesel: Besides Riddick 4, even a spin-off series was planned

How does the Riddick series continue? This question has been on Diesel’s mind for years. Basically, he has been advocating for another sequel since the release of the third part. The project first became concrete in April 2016 when Diesel confirmed that he was working on a fourth film together with Riddick director David Twohy.

You can watch the trailer for Riddick here:

In addition, Diesel hinted at a major franchise expansion. Riddick will not only take place in the cinema, but will conquer domestic screens in the form of the spin-off series Merc City. Initially, there was talk of a production start in spring 2017. Six years later, however, none of the projects have yet appeared.

Sci-fi sequel: Vin Diesel has by no means given up hope on Riddick 4

So where does the Riddick universe stand? While the Merc City series seems to be on hold for now, we shouldn’t write off a new film. Just a few days ago, Diesel posted a concept drawing on Instagram showing his sci-fi hero in action and tagged it with the hashtag Furya.

Officially announced with a theatrical release, however, is Riddick 4: Furya not yet. But since Diesel is still campaigning for the sequel ten years after the release of the last part, at least it gives hope that the film hasn’t died. Maybe one day we will really see the Furya adventure.
