Netflix forgoes important anime detail in One Piece series – but

The first images of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation are now available. Anime fans have noticed a big change to the main character Ruffy, but one of the stars is defending it.

Netflix is trying hard to make its live-action adaptation of One Piece as fan-friendly as possible. Manga creator Eiichiro Oda is heavily involved, and the showrunners are passionate franchise fans themselves. One change from the anime One Piece is already clear, however. Ruffy (Iñaki Godoy) is not wearing sandals, but shoes. Fans are baffled, but the change actually has a reason.

Now Nami actress Emily Rudd named it in a discussion on her Instagram account, quoted from by a One Piece fan:

“We all did as many stunts ourselves as we were allowed. Sandals are unfortunately not the safest footwear for stunts, and we didn’t want to deprive you of the great work of Iñaki Godoy. “

Ruffy’s sandals are already one of his trademarks in the manga, but will be familiar to fans especially from the anime. Some may bemoan the lack of fidelity to the original. But many will be pleased with how much physical effort the cast obviously puts into their roles.
