The 1899 duo is getting another shot at Netflix. Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are adapting an extremely successful comic book series that sounds like a cross between It and Stranger Things.
The recent chequered success story of Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese and Netflix is not over yet. The streaming service had cancelled the long-awaited mystery project 1899 in autumn 2022 after only one season. Fans were horrified, the showrunner duo at least surprised. Previously, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese (also for Netflix) had realised the extremely successful and popular sci-fi mindfuck Dark.
As the well-informed industry magazine Deadline reports, Netflix is now tying up the sci-fi duo exclusively again. And the first series proposal sounds pretty good.
The Dark team’s new Netflix series sounds like an even tougher Stranger Things
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese will adapt the comic book series Something Is Killing The Children (buy it on Amazon). According to Deadline, over 2 million copies of the series have crossed the counter in the last 5 years. To date, 28 volumes have been published, some of which have won awards. The spin-off House Of Slaughter became the most successful comic not published by Marvel or DC in the last 25 years. Netflix is therefore facing a potential gold vein here.
What is Something Is Killing The Children about?
The official, translated synopsis of Something is Killing the Children is as follows: “In the town of Archer’s Peak, children are disappearing. Most never return, but those who do tell terrible stories of a terrifying creature that lives in the shadows. Their only chance to find and destroy the menace is a mysterious stranger who believes the children and sees what they see. Her name is Erica Slaughter and she kills monsters. “
More series to come from the Dark and 1899 duo
This sounds like a mix of Stranger Things, It and Fear Street and the fact that this promising project has been entrusted to the duo of Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese only makes it more exciting.
According to Deadline, Something Is Killing The Children is also only the beginning of a refreshed, multi-year collaboration between Netflix and the 1899 duo.
