The sci-fi action blockbuster Star Trek Beyond is the last film from the iconic franchise to hit the cinemas so far. Part 4 was even announced some time ago with a theatrical release in 2023.

Between 2009 and 2016, three new Star Trek films were released, which focused on the young Enterprise crew. Especially Star Trek Into Darkness, the second part of the sci-fi reboot, was the subject of huge hype at the time of its release. Not least, it featured the legendary villain Khan.

The not to be underestimated Star Trek Beyond took the series back to its roots and told an exciting sci-fi adventure on an alien planet, which benefited extremely from the well-rehearsed ensemble around Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. To date, it is the last of the remakes.

Sad sci-fi sequel: for 7 years we’ve been waiting in vain for Star Trek 4

The main reason why the Star Trek franchise has stagnated at the cinema is the box office performance of Star Trek Beyond. Regardless of its quality, the sequel failed to meet financial expectations. On a budget of 185 million US dollars, 343 million US dollars came in worldwide, which is too little for such a blockbuster.

Securing talent turned out to be another problem. As mentioned earlier, the Star Trek reboot thrives on its cast. Whether this cast would return was uncertain for a long time. Originally, even the renewed participation of Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father was planned. But eternal negotiations scuttled the plans.

The situation became really complicated when two different Star Trek projects were under discussion. While the classic sequel Star Trek 4 made no progress, director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino revealed his interest in a spin-off of his own. In the end, however, this did not materialise.
